What could be exciting than ushering out one year and beginning a new one than a photographic excursion to Mallorca, Spain? The itinerary starts in Palma the capital of Mallorca, a city dating back to a Roman settlement, but whose history began during the Bronze Age. Our itinerary will take us to the South Coast, Port d'Andratx and the prehistoric village of Capocorb Vell, the East Coast region of harbours and fishing villages, the Tramuntana Mountain region in the north, and the medieval town of Alcudia. The climate of Mallorca is marked by the Mediterranean. The weather in December and January is similar to April in New England.
This two-week intensive program, led by Professor Ron DiRito, is ideal for all students interested in photography or video. Students will create a portfolio that engages and explores the diversity of the cultural history, heritage and environment of the island of Mallorca, Spain. Students have opportunities in their daily assignments to work and photograph in a variety of environments, which will be addressed within the context of documentary imaging and representation.
Through studio discussions, critiques, and readings students become familiar with key concepts and fundamental theories of representation to assist students with their intentions, message, and the overall impact of their work. Montserrat's home base is the PDF Academia, which is outfitted with 16 digital workstations, printers and a projector for critiques.
An island of 3640 sq. km, Mallorca possesses amazing landscapes from beautiful white sand beaches and crystal waters to the rugged limestone encrusted Serra de Tramuntana and lush Serra de Llevant mountain ranges. Students enjoy a full range of cultural activities and excursions. Field trips to historic landmarks, castles and palaces, archaeological sites and ruins, museums and galleries, markets and festivals present the history and culture of the island and offer exciting opportunities to explore its diversity and beauty.
Price: $3800 per student, which includes flight, airport transfers, housing, breakfast every morning, two dinners per week, and ground transportation for the excursions. Students will stay in double rooms in a former 14th century monastery.
